Developing S.M.A.R.T. Goals for Job Search Success

Without a clearly defined plan, your job search will be an aimless exercise in competing with the thundering horde of other aimless job seekers fighting for the small percentage of advertised job openings.  Planning affords you the power (your ability to take action) to cut your job search time in half AND get the job you really want.  It will enable you to take a quantum leap over and above all the rest.

Developing your S.M.A.R.T. Goal for job search success.

There is no clear consensus about precisely what the five key S.M.A.R.T. words mean, or even what they are in any given situation.  For the purposes of writing S.M.A.R.T. goals for job search success, I suggest the following values:  Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Bound.

A specific goal will usually answer the five "W" questions:

  • What: What do I want to accomplish?
  • Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.
  • Who: Who is involved?
  • Where: Identify a location.
  • Which: Identify requirements and constraints.

Job Search Goal Example:  My goal is to work as a [job title], in a [what type of company]with no more than [how many employees] within [how many mile] of [your residence] with compensation at no less than [$ amount] by [a date no further than 90 days from the beginning of your job search].  This is important to me because [answer the "Why" question here].

There's a ton of information about writing S.M.A.R.T. goals Online.

PLEASE... DO NOT skip this essential and critical step!  It means the difference between getting what you want and not!
